You’ve found a pediatric dentist and you’re ready to take your child to his appointment. But how will pediatric dental benefits work at this visit and in the future?
Once you learn how children’s dental procedures are classified*, you’ll have a better idea of how they’ll work with your coverage.
Most plans are designed with kids in mind, which means pediatric dental benefits are usually part of your coverage. They’re typically classified into 3 categories:
Preventative
Services including routine oral exams, X-rays, cleanings, sealants, and fluoride varnish treatments are aimed at identifying and preventing early dental issues.
Basic
These services go beyond preventative measures—they’re focused on correcting minor issues. Treatments include fillings for cavities, preventative resin restorations, extractions, and root canals.
Major
These procedures address larger oral health issues. Treatments typically include pulp therapy, crowns, and space maintainers.
