Dental X-rays are extremely safe, emitting one of the lowest amounts of radiation—comparable to that of a short airplane flight. But what if you’re expecting? Is it safe to get an X-ray while pregnant?
No single X-ray produces enough radiation exposure to harm a developing fetus, according to the American College of Radiology. And they are safe through all three trimesters.
Whether or not you’re due for an X-ray, it’s important to make a trip to your dentist during pregnancy. There may be a link between untreated gum disease and pre-term births. To avoid the risk of spreading infections to your body, make sure to get treatment for cavities and any other emergency dental work. Antibiotics used to treat infections are also considered safe. Dental treatments beyond regular cleanings should be performed during the second trimester of pregnancy, according to the American Pregnancy Association.
X-rays and fillings are safe, but what isn’t? Cosmetic dental work, such as teeth whitening, should be avoided during pregnancy.
Remember, the best way to have a healthy smile during pregnancy is to practice good oral health habits. Here’s to a stress-free pregnancy, filled with smiles!
